A conversation with the Ao3

I’ve written to the nice people of the OTW/Ao3 about some of my confusion at their tagging of anime fandoms and I do think it let to a somewhat productive exchange. I know some folks feel that Ao3 is not very inclusive when it comes to fandoms outside the typical media fanoms, but personally I can’t say I feel they are deliberately exclusive.

I do suppose the people making the rules for tag wrangling may have no experiences in anime fandom, though. Something that can easily be changed by dialogue. I hope they’ll put up a comprehensive guide for tagging one day, because I think that will also help people know where to look for their fandoms.

As it could be interesting to others, too, I’ve decided to put up the exchange I’ve had with the nice person of the Ao3 support team. Maybe if more people feel encouraged to send their feedback directly to them, there will be some changes to what today is percieved as limiting anime fandom on the Archive.

Well, I do think that went well. I have a much better understanding of their tagging now. Not sure, how I feel about the reasoning for leaving Fullmetal Alchemist as Fullmetal Alchemist without the Japanese title, but it is the title most international fans are looking for, so it should be alright.

Maybe someone else has some thoughts on this?

My first yuletide went great! My recipient did seem to like the fic I’ve written: So the most important mission was accomplished. :)
And also I’ve got a wonderful fic from my yuletide writer in a fandom that is (obviously) very dear to my heart:

House and Home (2625 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Tokyo Babylon
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Sumeragi Subaru

Sometimes, Subaru's job breaks his heart. And other times everyday life does, too.

It focuses entirely on Subaru and his job as onmyouji and is just wonderful! Go check it out if you know TB at all. :D
Now that Christmas is over I can hopefully find the time to browse the collection for a bit!

yuletide was so much fun that I actually want to sit down and write next years yuletide letter right now.

I can’t believe it! Over a hundred stories were already added to the [livejournal.com profile] yuletide collection on Ao3! (Don’t click if you don’t want to look at the fandoms... Could spoil you.)

I haven’t even finished half of my story, yet! O.o Some people are really fast...

Yuletide and stories on Ao3

My nominations for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide were approved, yeah! Signu-ps should start soonish.

I thought it might be a good time to start uploading at least some of my older fics, but I’m really slow at sifting through them and at least polish them a little before uploading. I’ve found some really interesting stuff that I had nearly forgotten about, but it will be some time before it’s presentable.
So all I’ve managed to put up on Ao3 (faviconSubarukun) until now were three short pieces. I promise more is to come. :D

I’m gearing up to take part in yuletide for the first time this year. :) And I’m so excited!

The nice thing about it is that you can be part of it even if you only read and comment on stories. If you want to get involved with the amazing Holiday exchange or want to know what it’s all about, a nice person has done a write up, of what is there to do at yuletide that goes beyond signing up for the exchange.

Ao3 commenting meme (2011)

I’ve stumbled over this A03 commenting meme.
I’ve recently noticed that I’m using the Archive a
lot for reading these days. I thought I should take it. And it
was fun. Probably a thing I should do at least once a year from now on!

Here it goes:

Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is then to go to Archive of Our own, and...

1) Look up an old favourite and let the writer know that you still love the story.
2) Find a story in your favourite fandom that you haven't read, or for which you haven't remembered to leave feedback.
3) Cheer up a friend by leaving feedback to their fic.
4) Go to the random tags view, select an interesting tag, and see of you can find something you like. repeat as needed.
5) Visit an old fandom that you aren't active in anymore (or a pairings that you've lost interest in, etc.) and see if there's any new interesting fic or re-read an old favourite.
6) Read a story in a fandom in which you've never read fic before.
5) Pick a category that you don't usually read and read some fic there (if you usually read RPF, maybe try some comics fic, if you're an anime fan, read fic about your favourite play, etc.)
6) Check out the comment thread on LJ or on DW where people have left links to their AO3 accounts, and see you can find anything new or interesting (and leave a link to your own fic as well, if you archive your fic to AO3).
7) Leave feedback to a fic that doesn't have any yet.
8) Make a rec post in your journal with all the good fic you found while doing this meme, and then link that post to the comments here so that others can enjoy the recs as well (alternatively you can just list your recs in a comment here if you don't want to make a whole post, or maybe use the bookmarking feature on AO3 if you have an account).

This is a totally no-pressure thing. You don't have to do all of these or any of these, they are mostly just to inspire you to broaden your horizons and go and read some fic.

And while actual comments are preferred, just leaving kudos is fine too if you don't have the time or energy for comments - most important is to just leave some kind of sign of appreciation for the writers and share the love. Also, you can both comment and leave kudos at AO3 without logging on, so you can participate even if you don't have an account there.

Some of the stories I read/reread and commented on (ordered by fandom):
