Parallelsfic Exchange for Rare Asian fandoms

subarukun: (Arslan Artbook)
The first announcement for this years [livejournal.com profile] parallelsfic exchange was made! Nominations begin in June! All rare fandoms with an Asian source can be nominated.

It started last year as a fic exchange and will be a multimedia exchange this year modeled after [livejournal.com profile] yuletide. (You can still offer/request only fic in 2012, though.) Details can be found here.

Here is a trailer for the exchange to get you in the mood:

Hunger Games!

  • Apr. 10th, 2012 at 3:23 PM
subarukun: (Subaru happy)

Finally watched Hunger Games! Hurrah!

And I did love it. I’m always a bit nervous when I loved the book and there is a movie in the making, but this one is really amazing! Hunger Games has so many moments that are amazing on the page, but there was so much that could have be confusing or silly if not done well - but it was amazing!

I loved Jennifer Lawrence. She is really tough, kick-ass, attractive! And to cast Lenny Kravitz as Cinna (a character I just adore to pieces) was just perfect!!!!

One of the things I felt nervous about was the fire dress thing, but it looked so great on screen! There were no head pieces on fire, though.

Off to buy the Kindle version for the books, so I can read them again wherever I go. :P

Korra and Kenshin

  • Apr. 1st, 2012 at 1:40 PM
subarukun: (RK Saitô)
I really love what I’ve seen of Legend of Korra so far. It’s great to have a slightly rebellious heroine for a change. Although she did have a sheltered life up until now and I like seeing how living and learning in the city will change her.

I’m glad that it feels so new and fresh. In my mind it was a great choice to set the story in the times of the new Avatar.

And old!Katara nearly broke my heart!

Also I’ve caught up on the first episode of the Rurouni Kenshin Shin Kyoto hen OVA and did really like it. (Although the character design kind of makes it seem like Saitô has gained weight. :P) Kenshin along with Tokyo Babylon was what brought me really into anime fandom so there is a fair bit of nostalgia involved.

The story is compressed and thus feels a little rushed at times and the first episode came with a fair bit of exposition for the viewers who needed it. (I'm not sure that people who haven't read the manga or seen the old anime could follow this without problems, though.)

All U.S. Internet Providers will be policing downloads by July 12, 2012
Seriously. WHAT THE FLYING FUCK WORLD.

"File-sharers, beware: By July 12, major US Internet service providers (ISPs) will voluntarily begin serving as copyright police for the entertainment industry, according to Cary Sherman, chief executive of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The so-called “six-strikes” plan is said to be one of the most effective anti-piracy efforts ever established in the US."

The article goes on to give details. After six notices, internet providers will decide to throttle a person's internet speed, or cut it off altogether. I don't know if they will crack down on torrents only, or if it is up to the internet provider. I get the sense it is up to the internet provider. So some people could get away with downloading non torrents, while others might get their internet service cut off. I urge you to click it and read, as we all know people who download.

No more downloading eps of your favorite shows for vidding, gifs, or fanfiction art. No more downloading screencaps possibly. I'm so sorry my friends. I don't even know if BT Guard will work to protect you, but I would google it if I were you. It is a professional service that supposedly can protect you from the invasive eyes of your internet provider.

Just, my friends, please make each other aware. Please be aware of the date JULY 12TH. Mark your calendar and double check with your internet provider by then. If you start receiving notices of downloaded activity, this is why. And your internet service could be throttled or cut off.

A conversation with the Ao3

  • Mar. 19th, 2012 at 11:33 AM
subarukun: (Ran Shinichi)
I’ve written to the nice people of the OTW/Ao3 about some of my confusion at their tagging of anime fandoms and I do think it let to a somewhat productive exchange. I know some folks feel that Ao3 is not very inclusive when it comes to fandoms outside the typical media fanoms, but personally I can’t say I feel they are deliberately exclusive.

I do suppose the people making the rules for tag wrangling may have no experiences in anime fandom, though. Something that can easily be changed by dialogue. I hope they’ll put up a comprehensive guide for tagging one day, because I think that will also help people know where to look for their fandoms.

As it could be interesting to others, too, I’ve decided to put up the exchange I’ve had with the nice person of the Ao3 support team. Maybe if more people feel encouraged to send their feedback directly to them, there will be some changes to what today is percieved as limiting anime fandom on the Archive.

Well, I do think that went well. I have a much better understanding of their tagging now. Not sure, how I feel about the reasoning for leaving Fullmetal Alchemist as Fullmetal Alchemist without the Japanese title, but it is the title most international fans are looking for, so it should be alright.

Maybe someone else has some thoughts on this?

3 fandoms meme

  • Mar. 17th, 2012 at 4:55 AM
subarukun: (Jiraishin Kyôya)
Tell me you want to play and I'll pick up to three of your fandoms. Then update your journal and answer the following questions:

1. What got you into this fandom in the first place?
2. Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
3. Favorite episodes/books/movies, etc?
4. Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
5. Do you think more people should get into this fandom?

[livejournal.com profile] navaan gave me Doctor Who, The Hunger Games and Jiraishin.

subarukun: (RK Kenshin Saitô walking together)
The newest trailer for the Rurouni Kenhsin live action movie is out and someone has already made subs for it (not that it’s hard to follow what’s going on :P).

I’m glad the original cast of Seiyû will return for the new anime version, but I have to admit after the current footage I’m even more excited for the live action movie.

But more Saitô is always a good thing. So give me more! :)

Legend of Korra

  • Feb. 27th, 2012 at 6:40 PM
subarukun: (Avatar friends)
The new trailer makes me impatient to finally get a look at this!

Korra is so very spunky! I love that she wants to be her own Avatar, although, of course, she’s Aang, too. :)

I’m a bit annoyed at “The Last Airbender: Legend of Korra” bit. It’s stupid how the current content industry world wide is a slave to licensing and trademark instead of creativity. It makes no sense to have a “last airbender” in the title, when this is obviously no longer true. And as Korra is very clearly her own avatar. “Avatar: The Legend of Korra” would have had a beautiful ring to it and I don’t think it would have had much impact on a certain movie franchise... *duh* But what do I know? :P

Anime/manga prompts

  • Jan. 25th, 2012 at 11:25 PM
subarukun: (RG Veda)

I’ve checked the Ao3 page yesterday and noticed that[livejournal.com profile] ficstogo now has a community on livejournal and also changed some significant rules:
  • Anonymous prompting is now allowed
  • Everyone can make more than three request now (Yeah!)

I really have to finish the fics for the prompts I claimed and now this gives me extra motivation. :P There is also a spreadsheet with prompts available.

It’s still a very silent prompt meme, but the mod seems determined to make it work. So if you have an Ao3 account and want to leave prompts for any/all manga or anime fandoms, head over an do so!

ACTA in a Nutshell –

What is ACTA?  ACTA is the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement. A new intellectual property enforcement treaty being negotiated by the United States, the European Community, Switzerland, and Japan, with Australia, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Mexico, Jordan, Morocco, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and Canada recently announcing that they will join in as well.

Why should you care about ACTA? Initial reports indicate that the treaty will have a very broad scope and will involve new tools targeting “Internet distribution and information technology.”

What is the goal of ACTA? Reportedly the goal is to create new legal standards of intellectual property enforcement, as well as increased international cooperation, an example of which would be an increase in information sharing between signatory countries’ law enforcement agencies.

Essential ACTA Resources

  • Read more about ACTA here: ACTA Fact Sheet
  • Read the authentic version of the ACTA text as of 15 April 2011, as finalized by participating countries here: ACTA Finalized Text
  • Follow the history of the treaty’s formation here: ACTA history
  • Read letters from U.S. Senator Ron Wyden wherein he challenges the constitutionality of ACTA: Letter 1 | Letter 2 | Read the Administration’s Response to Wyden’s First Letter here: Response
  • Watch a short informative video on ACTA: ACTA Video
  • Watch a lulzy video on ACTA: Lulzy Video

Say NO to ACTA. It is essential to spread awareness and get the word out on ACTA.

Dreamwidth journal

I’ve finally taken the time to costumize the layout on my dreamwidth and it was so nice that I’ve decided to use the layout here on lj too. :D

I used this layout by [livejournal.com profile] thefulcrum.

Now I can get started on dw and get the hang of it. :P

On a side note: I didn’t get much writing done this week. RL is occupying most of my energy at the moment, but I’ll get back into the writing habit. I swear. ^.^

Do you like meta?

  • Jan. 18th, 2012 at 7:49 PM
subarukun: (RK Saitô)
Some nice people are trying to set up a meta fest in March and at the moment are doing an interest poll.

I prefer writing stories over writing meta, but I know I love reading and discussing other people’s thoughts about fandom in general or specific sources. Maybe someone is interested? Then head over and tell them you’re interested - even if you only want to read along. Or maybe you have some interesting meta ideas? Going by the comments any kind of meta seems to be welcome adn whatever fandom you want to discuss is great.

A few days ago I got an account over at dw. I’m subarukun there, too. Could be that fandom_stocking will move to dw after the latest comment changes, though. So I want to be prepared for next year. :)

As of yet I haven’t done anything with it, but I just might use both journals equally in the future, using dw as a backup journal or something.

I don’t have that much here, yet, so I can wait... ;P

Are there any interesting comms or journals to follow? Any dw recs?

I’ve written three little stories for[livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking. RL was a bit crazy or I would have tried to do more. But that’s the fun of [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking: It’s so low pressure.

I also found some pretty awesome stuff in my own stocking!  A big thank you to all the people leaving greetings, recs, icons and fic. (Especially to navaan for the wonderful Star Wars ficlet called Family. I remember us talking about that scenario and now I’m really wondering what it would have been like for the twins if their roles had been reversed.)

That was another fun experiences, although I wish there had been more/manga anime stuff inspiring me to write. (The anime presence overall wasn’t that small, but was mostly centered around big fandoms like Hagaren and so on. That’s awesome too, of course, just didn’t inspire me to write much this time around...;P )

Avatar: The Last Airbender sequel comic

  • Jan. 10th, 2012 at 6:12 PM
subarukun: (Avatar friends)
Racebending.com has a preview of the Avatar sequel comic The Promise. The comic looks fun enough, I’d say, although of course I’ll have to read it for myself before I pass a final verdict.
But I like the idea. It would have been great if another season would have shown what happened after the war. Rebuilding can’t be easy. So, yeah I’m excited to get my hands on this comic and find out if it feels like a real sequel. :D

2012 is here!

Happy New Year to everyone! Hope your start into 2012 was as great as mine. ^__^

I wish there were more fandoms with pairings at [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking that inspired me. But my muse is a little non-compliant at the moment. I managed to finish a ficlet for a friend at least and there are one or to other things I might manage...

While thinking about what to write for my yuletide story I had two ideas where to go with it and I think I’ll write the second one down after I finished the ficlets. I’m in the mood to let Sei-chan do something gory behind Subaru’s back, although I have no idea if I can do that justice.

I had hoped to have the Saitô/Kenshin story for the Anime & Manga Fics to Go finshed by now, too. I’ll have to go back and redo part of it in order to do Saitô’s character justice. Maybe I’ll even go back and change the point of view... ^^; I'll take my time on that one until I'm satisfied.

Also my Wii has returned and I can start playing the new Zelda game. Yeah! Good start into the new year!

Tokyo Babylon

subarukun: (Subaru bloody)
I’m thinking about ordering the new edition of Tokyo Babylon from Japan. It’s a new two volume edition and the first volume is set to be published at the beginning of January.

I've been feeling nostalgic all week and had urge to reread the manga. *sigh* And then later today I came across this review of TB at goodreads and it made me remember why I love the manga so much. :D I wish one day they’d make a real anime out of it. (The OVA is just not enough to do this justice...) That would be my dream come true!

Looks like the new Ai no kusabi OVA has a release date. Finally. The Japanese site says it'll be released on January 18, 2012.

Asian sources @ yuletide

subarukun: (Olivier smiling)
If I look at the [livejournal.com profile] yuletide prompt list there were so many interesting things requested that I would have liked to write! Maybe I’m doing it for the NYR thing... At least one story?

All in all there was some nice fic for Asian Sources in different categories and I do think they need more love! I’m thinking of making a rec list when I’ve finally finished browsing. Who want to leave feedback for the a little underappreciated fandoms of our headrt can browse the yuletide 2011 collection on the whole or by media type. Maybe start with anime/manga and games and then work through the rest?

Have some of my recs and if you haven't yet don't forget to check out the nice Tokyo Babylon fic I recieved.
